Snowed in? Really???

What about people who call off work because of a little bit of inclement weather?

Lately, and as all local Pittsburghers know, the bad weather doth cometh.

Back when I actually OPERATED companies, I used to make sure that I was always in the office by about 5:00 a.m. or so, cuz that's when the calls from my most loyal people would start to come in. (They'd figure, "even HE wouldn't be in this early!")

"Shock" and "Dismay" would be the two words that best described their reactions when they heard MY voice, and not that of my voice mail (or, the voice mail of our receptionist ... the favorite person to whom sick employees would prefer to "surrender").

"Sure, I'M here, Foster", I would say, "What's up?"

"Well, err, ahh, ... I guess you must have beaten the storm, but things look really BAAAD out here in (name your most distant suburb). I'm not sure that the old steel belted radials will get me there." (or, words to that effect.)

Sometimes, I would get a "double-dose" of the "maladies". That is,  "I'm, ahh, stuck AND I'm just not feeling good." (Keep in mind, I get these calls despite the fact  that  even the  (ultra-cautious) SCHOOLS have not yet run up their colors.

Anyway, it's just one more testament to the difference between those who have a "piece of the action" and those who don't. Typically (and this is very unscientific), the people who WOULD make it in (and keep in mind the fact that I always try to "equitize" as many "players" as I can) are those same folks who have shares or at least profit-sharing.

Face it --- Pittsburgh is still one of the most "them versus us" cities in the U.S.. This probably comes from our union history; maybe it goes back to the Pinkerton shootings, but even in a start-up, where closeness is the rule, not the exception, this can still be seen.
